Penelope Cruz Sets Sail ‘On Stranger Tides’

So the news Penelope Cruz was joining Lars von Trier’s Melancholia was a bit premature at best, but today’s Cruz news seems to be legit as The Hollywood Reporter brings word the Spanish beauty is set to join Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which is set to being film in Hawaii this summer for a May 20, 2011 release.

Rob Marshall (Nine, Chicago) is set to direct the feature which was penned by stable Pirates scripters Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot. Plot details are limited, but it is known it will take lead from the hint at the end of At World’s End and the tale will have something to do with the Fountain of Youth.

Marshall last directed Cruz in Nine as she is undoubtedly stepping in for Keira Knightley as the film’s beauty and earning herself a paycheck before she can get back to doing more serious work such as the potential von Trier feature or hopefully another team-up with Pedro Almodovar.
