Box-Office Wrap-Up: Jan. 1 – Jan. 3, 2010

Avatar remained strong, becoming only the fifth film in history to cross a billion dollars in worldwide box office. And it did it in 17 days! Let’s break this weekend down…
#1 movie predicted correctly: 10 Weeks In A Row
Did it fall even ten percent? Avatar started with a strong $25m Friday and then didn’t let up much to hit $68.3m. Can it challenge Titanic for worldwide dollars ($1.8 billion)? How about its domestic total of $600.7 million? Avatar‘s at $352.1 million after 17 days and that’s pretty good in my book.
Result: 68.3 million (My rank: #1, $19.7m off)
The good news? It didn’t get mauled. The bad news? It’s up against a juggernaut. It’s probably time to reward Andres’ brilliant $68.1m call on Avatar. And alert commenter Danny King was dialed in on Sherlock, only missing by .5m.
Result: 38.3 million (My rank: #2, $5.1m off)
The Squeakquel outperformed my projections, as per usual, because I expect everyone to boycott the word “Squeakquel.” We’re well over $200m cume on this title, looks like Jason Lee will be making that contractually obligated third appearance.
Result: 36.6 million (My rank: #3, $7.3m off)
Has anyone seen a production budget here? They are over $60m but they might have had to pay that trio of stars… unless they just convinced them it would be great to work together. Which I’m sure it was.
Result: 18.7 million (My rank: #4, $2.8m off)
Seven straight weekends in the top five. Very impressive.
Result: 12.6 million (My rank: #6, $5.7m off)
A very timely Entertainment Weekly cover for this film, it should all but guarantee a load of Oscar noms.
Result: 11.3 million (My rank: #5, $3.7m off)
I wanted to see it succeed, and it grew in strength this weekend. But I stand by my original “probably not enough to get many more 2-D projects” statement.
Result: 10.0 million (My rank: #7, $1m off)
The only way I’m talking about this title again is if they attach the Iron Man 3 trailer to it.
Result: 5.2 million (My rank: #8, $1.4m off)
9. Nine
Poor Nine. It shoulda been a contender. Still, would you be surprised by a Best Picture nom? It’s not like wacky things don’t happen around Hollywood.
Result: 4.2 million (My rank: #9, $0.6m off)
I’ll take my ten weekend win streak and head off to ponder the next group of contenders for the crown. Jackal called it first, Avatar again, for the fourth weekend in a row. Any alert commenters know the last time that happened?
Result: 4.1 million (My rank: #10, $1.1m off)

See you Thursday to break down Daybreakers, Youth in Revolt, and Leap Year.
