‘Meatballs’ Scores Big a Second Week in a Row, ‘Surrogates’ Comes Up Second

I am heading out the door for a Toy Story and Toy Story 2 3D double-feature, but I just couldn’t leave without posting Steve Mason’s early weekend box-office results in which Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is looking to score big for a second week in a row hitting $5.5 million on Friday and looking at a $22 million weekend and a second week at the top. Of course, this means Laremy’s prediction saying that this weekend’s new flick Fame would end up at the top is way off, as the critically panned remake only took in $3.8 million on Friday and Mason estimates will only hit $9.8 million for the weekend, just under $9 million short of Laremy’s prediction.

It does, however, look like Laremy has the #2 slot nailed as Surrogates earned $5.1 million on Friday and is eying a $14.5 million weekend according to Mason.

This weekend’s other new “wider” release, Pandorum, which went unscreened for critics here in Seattle, earned $1.5 million on Friday and will likely end around $4 million for the weekend.

Mason’s Friday estimates are listed below and Laremy will be here on Sunday with a complete wrap-up. I will say this, at least he had Meatballs at $17 million as a close third. He just underestimated audience reaction for the animated kid flick, which must be pretty decent… perhaps I should take in a triple feature.

  1. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (Sony) – $5.5 million
  2. Surrogates (Disney) – $5.1 million
  3. Fame (MGM) – $3.8 million
  4. The Informant! (Warner Bros) – $2.2 million
  5. Tyler Perry’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself (Lionsgate) – $1.65 million
