First Look at Angelina Jolie in the Spy Thriller ‘Salt’

Featured below are the first two photos of Angelina Jolie from Salt, the new spy thriller in which Jolie plays Evelyn A. Salt, a CIA officer who swore an oath to duty, honor, and country. When she is accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy, Salt goes on the run to clear her name and ultimately prove she is a patriot. Using all her skills and years of experience as a covert operative, she must elude capture and protect her husband or the world’s most powerful forces will erase any trace of her existence. Liev Schreiber stars as Winter, Salt’s boss and friend on the Russian desk at the CIA, and Chiwetel Ejiofor plays Peabody, a CIA counter-intelligence officer.

Among the many different looks she has in the film are a soft-looking, all-business blonde and a raven-haired femme fatale who easily could be concealing a dagger or a gun. Which is the real Salt? That’s what filmmakers say is the central mystery.

The filmmaker we are discussing is Phillip Noyce (Clear and Present Danger) and the film at one time was set up with Tom Cruise in the starring role, but the story was changed for a female character and the Cruise-Jolie switch took place.

As for the change, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura says it wasn’t simply a matter of changing the name and going from “he” to “she”. He told USA Today, “I had no idea how complex it would be. We had to rethink the whole notion of how a man vs. a woman operates in the business world, in personal relationship and in friendships.”

Columbia Pictures is expected to release the film in 2010. You can get a much larger look at the two images right here.
