The winners at the 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced tonight and it is a mixed bag as not one single movie won more than one award and Kate Winslet continued on her path to her first Oscar win.
Winslet took home the Actor for Best Supporting Actress for her role in The Reader, but didn’t go home double-fisting as Meryl Streep took home her second SAG award with a win for her great performance in Doubt. Heath Ledger once again won for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight and his award was accepted by his co-star Gary Oldman who gave a short but sweet speech. The other motion picture acting award went to Sean Penn for Milk as he topped Mickey Rourke who won at the Golden Globes as the plot thickens on the way to the Oscars. Like Rourke at the Globes, Penn gave a pretty good speech and was obviously a little choked up with the win.
The major award for Best Ensemble cast was a bit of a shocker to me since Streep, Adams, Davis and Hoffman were all nominated for Doubt and Penn and Brolin were nominated for Milk. Both films saw an acting winner in Streep and Penn and yet the Actor went to the cast of Slumdog Millionaire. Why am I shocked? Because only Dev Patel was nominated for his acting in Slumdog and he lost to Ledger and yet the other films had more individual nominees as well as winners. Sure, I see Slumdog winning at the Oscars, but logically this one just didn’t make sense to me. Oh well, not a big deal, kudos to them and I actually thought the young actors in Slumdog were quite good and have actually been under-appreciated this award season as Patel and Pinto have seen the majority of attention.

The 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards will be simulcast live on TNT and TBS on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 at 8 p.m. (ET/PT), 7 p.m. (CT) and 6 p.m. (MT) from the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles. SAG will honor outstanding performances from 2008 in five film categories and eight television categories, including the distinctive ensemble awards. The presentation marks TNT’s 12th telecast of this prestigious industry event and the fourth consecutive simulcast on TBS.
