Curses. America’s love for toothless movies has foiled me again. In this case it was Paul Blart only dropping 32% and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans not living up to financial expectations. Let’s break this thing down.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Week In A Row
It looks like Blart is all profit from here on out. So the message is clear: make simpleton PG movies and you’ll make dollars. Sweet!
Result: 21.5 million (My rank: #2, $5.9m off)
The third Underworld performed the worst of the bunch. But on a budget of $35m we still might see a fourth one.
Result: 20.7 million (My rank: #1, $3.1m off)
3. Gran Torino
As B-Luv has already noted, this is on the way to being the biggest Eastwood flick of all time. However, I maintain 1978’s Every Which Way But Loose is still way up adjusted for inflation.
Result: 16.0 million (My rank: #3, $0.6m off)
I refuse to talk about this title any further. I’m boycotting it.
Result: 12.3 million (My rank: #9, $5.0m off)
Okay, back on track! I thought it would do a little better based on the Oscar bounce. But give it time. This one is a slow burn, even after it wins Best Picture.
Result: 10.5 million (My rank: #5, $1.8m off)
It looks like this will very easily finish 7th amongst all 3-D films, ever. It’s still $28m behind Hannah Montana for 6th though.
Result: 10.0 million (My rank: #7, $.1m off)
7. Inkheart
Obviously this one got crushed. It might be time for Brendan Fraser to find a new shtick.
Result: 7.7 million (My rank: #4, $4.8m off)
8. Bride Wars
I have a hard time figuring out if this one will do well in foreign markets. Are people overseas nuts about weddings too?
Result: 7.0 million (My rank: #8, $0.6m off)
Definite Oscar bounce here. I think this is where it stops though, and obviously this film is way underwater financially. So let’s not going patting each other’s backs just yet.
Result: 6.0 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
10. Notorious
Crushed. A 72% drop. It stands at $32m overall, with very little hope of international dollars. The DVD should do okay. This is a longish way of saying it’s impossible to say how this one is doing, or has done. Sorry, no production budget released.
Result: 5.7 million (My rank: #6, $5.0m off)
