TIME has posted their top ten films of 2008 along with a variety of other “Tops of 2008” lists which you can find here. However, I think many will be shocked by a few of the picks especially the inclusion of Speed Racer and the absense of Oscar chasing works such as Revolutionary Road and Rachel Getting Married. I say you will be shocked primarily because these lists are relatively rote and easy to figure out, but this one shows they actually delivered the films they liked as opposed to the ones they should like.
Here’s the list, which appears to be compiled by Richard Corliss:
- WALL•E
- Synecdoche, New York
- My Winnipeg
- 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
- Milk
- The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
- Slumdog Millionaire
- Iron Man
- Speed Racer
- Encounters at the End of the World
I haven’t seen Encounters at the End of the World by Werner Herzog, but it is already available on DVD and Blu-ray and I have been told a review copy is heading my way so I am anxious to check it out. It documents a group of individuals who work, play and struggle to survive in Antarctica. You can get it at Amazon here.
One notable film on the list if 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, a brilliant film that is almost a nightmare to watch. A friend of mine watched it over the weekend and was reporting back as they watched several Oscar worthy films, but went mysteriously mum after watching this one. Did he like it? Did he kill himself? Hmmmmm.
