UPDATE: Devin Faraci at CHUD is running a whiny little piece about how they broke the Russell Crowe is both the Sheriff of Nottingham and Robin Hood story first thanks to their anonymous sources which basically made the news a rumor, which is why no one cared and finally jumped on it when the DIRECTOR actually gave word. Now, however, CHUD’s news does become interesting because their RUMOR has proven to be true, but in fact instead of Crowe being both characters, both characters are lumped into one character. CHUD’s comments read as:
The Sheriff IS Robin Hood. I have read the original screenplay for Nottingham from Ethan Reiff and Cyrus Voris, and that is not the case there – it’s just a take where the Sheriff, Tornham, is caught between a shitty king and a folk hero thief who is kind of an asshole and a sell out – but I have been told that when new writer Brian Helgeland came aboard things changed in a big way.

News comes from MTV that Russell Crowe will not only be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham in Ridley Scott’s delayed Nottingham, but he will also play Robin Hood as well.
Scott tells the music mag, “He’s playing both!” He continued saying the dual roles would be “a good old clever adjustment of characters. One becomes the other. It changes.” Uh… What?
Seriously here, I don’t get it.
The original synopsis tells us Crowe stars as the Sheriff of Nottingham in a revisionist take on the Robin Hood tale, with Nottingham as a noble and brave lawman who labors for a corrupt king and engages in a love triangle with Maid Marion and Robin Hood. This basically means Crowe is about to have a threesome with himself and Sienna Miller who is expected to play Marion, at least she was until the film was delayed.
Perhaps Scott has something up his sleeve, but this sounds like an unnecessary idea that will just throw off the audience while they watch. Didn’t Eddie Murphy already kill the one actor playing multiple roles idea? Perhaps Crowe will play the Sheriff in a fatsuit.
