News came out today that Nicole Kidman of all people is going to have her own little action adventure feature called The Eighth Wonder, a pitch from Mr. and Mrs. Smith scribe, Simon Kinberg.
The film is described as centering on an archeological discovery that sets off a globe-spanning race. The goal is to create a movie that will be to Raiders of the Lost Ark what the Bourne movies are to James Bond movies: a character-driven, treasure-hunting thriller. Kinberg will pen the script in the fall after working on Night at the Museum 2, Sherlock Holmes and a new adaptation of The Osterman Weekend at Summit.
I don’t know about you, but Kidman just doesn’t seem the type. Based on the description of the film I just can’t see Kidman performing in the capacity that Harrison Ford did in the Indy films, and to say they want to have it work the way Bourne worked for Bond just confuses me that much more.
The Bourne films really only told Bond producers to make a movie without a focus on gadgets and silly Bond girl names, what exactly do they intend to update from Raiders of the Lost Ark that compares? That is, outside of the obvious gender substitution.
I would assume they will make it more modern, but doesn’t that really mean they are going to make a femme-driven National Treasure? I’m cool with that, but Kidman always seemed more suited for dramatic roles such as her upcoming feature Australia. Any time she went actiony, such as The Peacemaker, it just wasn’t that good. At least that is my opinion.
