Wow. Winning an Oscar helps, eh? Quite the upset – I only wish it could have happened to a better Coen film.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Week In A Row
It’s not that I hated it. It was decent. But decent isn’t good enough for my favorite filmmakers. It will be interesting to see how the word of mouth works on this one.
Result: 19.4 million (My rank: #2, $3.5m off)
Since Tyler hates me and my ilk I’ll take the time to talk a little more Burn After Reading. I’ve got to think that $19m opening was due to two things: 1) Brad Pitt and 2) The Oscar for No Country. With those two things in mind I’m predicting a tough week two for Burn because the film didn’t have a ton of Pitt and wasn’t like No Country at all.
Result: 18.0 million (My rank: #1, $2.0m off)
Actually, wait, no I’m not. Nothing is out next week to cut in to the Coen dollars. This was about as good a week as Righteous Kill could have hoped for. De Niro and Pacino aren’t exactly De Niro and Pacino anymore.
Result: 16.5 million (My rank: #3, $1.1m off)
4. The Women
How about that pick? Solid. Decent counterprogramming effort for a sluggish September.
Result: 10.0 million (My rank: #4, $0.4m off)
I told you on Thursday the wheels would fall off after the four slot.
Result: 4.3 million (My rank: #7, $.8m off)
Of course, I did think Tropic would grab that five spot. When do you think I will start a new streak? I’m predicting December.
Result: 4.1 million (My rank: #5, $.4m off)
I wonder if at least I’ll have all ten in the top ten. That would be nice for a change. Don’t look now, but Dark Knight is just $45m short of being the fourth film in history to hit a billion worldwide.
Result: 4.0 million (My rank: #8, $.8m off)
A 70% drop means that people didn’t just bash this film after seeing it – they implored and possibly paid loved ones to stay away.
Result: 2.4 million (My rank: #6, $1.3m off)
9. Traitor
Back on track! And I peeked ahead and noticed that I did in fact have the top ten in the top ten. That counts for something. I’d like my 15% raise now.
Result: 2.1 million (My rank: #9, $0.5m off)
10. Death Race
On a production budget of $45m it sits at $37m worldwide. Thus, the unrated DVD budget will be massive.
Result: 2.0 million (My rank: #10, $0.1m off)
