I get why Brad bashed me in his Friday box office column. If I had to stay up late and report on this miserable weekend I’d be lashing out too. It was a $75m weekend (for the top twelve); the lowest since December of 2007. So it’s simple math as to why my predictions were off. If you put a bunch of low earners in a pile a few hundred dollars here or there screws everything up.
#1 movie predicted correctly: 0 Weeks In A Row
I’m pleased it won for the third weekend. Why wouldn’t I be? I love this film.
Result: 11.5 million (My rank: #3, $.9m off)
2. Babylon A.D.
It finished second but $9.7m is laughable. You have to feel bad for everyone involved here.
Result: 9.7 million (My rank: #2, $1.8m off)
The domestic public comes through again! I think people probably went to the theater to see a new movie, looked at the offerings, and then said “Egh, let’s just see Dark Knight again.” Very wise.
Result: 8.7 million (My rank: #8, $3.1m off)
That’s a nice projection. All hail Oracle. This looks like another moderate box office success for Sony. I have to hand it to them – they may not make great films but they DO make money. Fox doesn’t do either of those (for the sake of comparison).
Result: 8.3 million (My rank: #4, $0.2m off)
5. Traitor
Another VERY strong pick considering this was the opening weekend. On a budget of $22m the fact that they are very near $10m gross is pretty solid.
Result: 7.9 million (My rank: #5, $0.7m off)
6. Death Race
Ah, I’m one off because everyone made the right call on Disaster Movie. Hopefully we can avoid spoof movies for the rest of our lives.
Result: 6.2 million (My rank: #7, $.2m off)
I’ve never been happier to be this far off. Wow. Good work everyone, we’re evolving as a people. Just in time for Oscar season too!
Result: 6.7 million (My rank: #1, $7.0m off)
8. Mamma Mia!
I think this was sing-a-long money, right? Had to be. A film doesn’t go up 2% at the box office in its seventh weekend without a gimmick.
Result: 4.4 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
Ummm, what happened to that College film? Everyone passed their too? I guess as average as Pineapple was it still had to have been 10x better than College. Oh, and to finish Brad’s story – I didn’t manage to make it to College as I’d intended. No one would go with me. It was like rats leaving a sinking ship when I asked.
Result: 3.3 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
I’ll take the hit for not being very accurate this weekend. Whatever. But when they put out real movies I’m pretty on top of it. If Hollywood and the audiences can take time off then so can I. Fair is fair. See you next Thursday, knuckleheads.
Result: 3.0 million (My rank: Not Ranked)
