UPDATE: ‘X-Files 3’ Going Straight to DVD?

UPDATE: This rumor has been squashed by Spotnitz himself only a mere hours after it’s inception.

Remember X-Files: I Want to Believe? What? You don’t? it was released in theaters less than a month ago.

Yes, I am serious.

You didn’t hear about it?

Well damn, it still might be showing somewhere, perhaps in a double feature with Midnight Meat Train. Don’t worry too much though, Fox didn’t even give it as much money as it gave the folks to make Space Chimps and they were probably right to do so seeing how Space Chimps made $7 million more than X-Files did at the theater. While bad timing never allowed me a chance to get to see the sequel news has surfaced that even though I Want to Believe was a huge box-office failure the franchise may not be over.

Dread Central received the following bit of information:

I understand – there was room for improvement … and there still might be. I work for Screaming Death Monkey and Spotnitz – the TERRIFIC Frank Spotnitz – told us this week that the team have already spoken about the next X-Files film. It’s likely the next release will go direct to DVD – but they’re working on the assumption they’ll have a similar budget.

A direct-to-DVD X-Files film working on a $30 million budget sounds pretty decent if you ask me. However, if that happens it remains a head scratcher as to why Fox would only spend $30 million on the feature film version as well. Then again, based on reviews it appears the effects and money spent weren’t exactly the problem as much as it was the story and the lack of attention Fox showed the film. I also think the overall secrecy surrounding the film also hurt it big time. It was almost as if they didn’t want anyone to know it even existed.

Of course, as much as a third X-Files film would be wanted by the fans I have a hard time believing David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would be willing to make a film that wouldn’t get the theatrical treatment at this point in their careers. Anderson doesn’t seem too interested in acting anyway and Duchovny is doing just fine in smaller film roles.

Dread Central seems to believe that if the film does go forward it may focus on some “2012 storyline” of which I have never heard about.
