It seems Will Ferrell may have a hard time making movies going forward if people have actually caught on that he is making the same movie over and over again as his latest release Semi-Pro performed terribly on Friday and is aiming to fall way under expectations.
Semi-Pro only managed a measley $5 million on Friday as estimated by Fantasy Moguls and is expected to only hit around $14.3 million for the weekend, and that is against virtually no competition. Our very own Oscar Oracle predicted the flick to manage $24.9 million which now looks to be a gross over estimate as it is now expected to only top last week’s release of Vantage Point by only a couple million dollars.
Considering Ferrell’s last pic, Blades of Glory, opened with $33 million, New Line must be scratching their heads wondering what happened. After all, this is the very same week they were absorbed by Warner Bros.
The other new release this weekend was Sony’s The Other Boleyn Girl starring Natalie Portman, Scarlett Johansson and Eric Bana. The period piece had a pretty good debut pulling in an estimated $2.9 million on only 1,166 screens, almost 2,000 fewer than Semi-Pro. Boleyn is expected to end up with approximately $8.5 million at the end of the weekend.
The only other new release performing at all is the Christina Ricci with a pig-nose feature Penelope, which for some reason is on 30 more screens than Boleyn. Penelope managed an estimated $1.1 million on Friday and is expected to hit around $3.1 for the weekend.
