ON DVD TODAY: February 5, 2008

Considering the past two terrible weeks for DVD releases this week looks like Christmas in February, that is, of course, if you have been paying any attention to my recommendations. Let’s see how you do this week as there are three definite must buys and one you should add to your collection if you haven’t already.

MUST BUYS
This is the obvious choice of the week. Even though the special features are dull you cannot pass up buying The Assassination of Jesse James. I already told you in my Blu-ray review how good it was. I also told you in my theatrical review how good it was. If I haven’te convinced you to buy it yet then I probably never will, but if you ever listen to anything I have to say listen now and buy this movie. BUY IT AT AMAZON
Here’s another title I already reviewed and enjoyed very much as this 30th Anniversary Edition of the Oscar-winning Midnight Express is good for so many reasons. For a list of them and a complete rundown read my review right here. BUY IT AT AMAZON
The only reason I haven’t reviewed 2 Days in Paris just yet is because I have been trying to play catch up with the late arriving review copy of FX’s “Damages”, but let me tell you right now this is a great film. It is a little long, but Julie Delpy is a fantastic wordsmith and a pleasure to watch on screen. Adam Goldberg is also fun to watch, but he can, at times, be a bit annoying. While this flick isn’t anywhere near as good as Before Sunset and Before Sunrise I think it is a nice alternative to those films considering there are so few films of this ilk. BUY IT AT AMAZON
This is under the Must Buy section because if you don’t own it you should. Behind Love, Actually this may be my second favorite big budget rom-com out there, and by big budget I am exclusing movies like Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Once because they are on a much higher plain. You’ve Got Mail is just a fun flick that I think everyone should own, I know I have my copy that I bought oh so many years ago. BUY IT AT AMAZON
THE REST
I can’t say anything about this film just yet because I haven’t watched it. I have it sitting over there along with Aristocats and I plan on getting to them both very soon, but there is a lot to watch. It got a mixed bag of reviews, but ended up making a reasonable amount at the box-office despite being in only 964 theaters at its widest release. It is a musical so keep that in mind, but you may want to give it a try. BUY IT AT AMAZON
I have never seen this animated 1970’s musical from Disney, but I can’t wait to check it out. I just hope it is as much fun as it looks like it could be. BUY IT AT AMAZON
In keeping with the trend I haven’t seen this film either. However, the difference with this one is that I have no desire to see it either. It did receive a 65% rating at RottenTomatoes, but it only earned $3.5 million at the box-office. This tells me critics were mixed on it and it never caught on with audiences. Sounds to me like a film you won’t love, but you also won’t hate… I call these kinds of films “rentals”. BUY IT AT AMAZON
Yeah, it’s an old one, but as I said in my review, this “the best looking high-definition video I have seen to date”. BUY IT AT AMAZON
I am including this simply as a means to tell you to never ever ever buy it, watch it, glimpse it or even touch it. The Brave One is awful on all levels. BUY IT AT AMAZON
The best way to describe this film is to tell you to “rent it if you must”. Read my HD DVD review here, it will tell you all you need to know. BUY IT AT AMAZON
