Oh man, I am just getting sadder and sadder by the day. I admit, the Oscars are an overblown and pompous award show, but to hear rumors they may be taking to the Internet in an effort to beef up this year’s show thanks to the writers’ strike just makes me sad. The Oscars are the capper to my year as they seem to close the door on each and every 365 days of movie and confirm whether or not the year was a good one or a bad one. I don’t necessarily have to agree with the winners, but as long as I am cheering for a nominee or two it somehow gives a little more meaning to this little job of mine.
Oscar producer has gone on record saying the show will go on. Of course, if the strike is over or the WGA is kind enough to grant the Oscar folks a stay of execution and help them put the show together things will go on as normal. However, should the strike continue new plans are finally beginning to surface.
Check out this short article from The Hollywood Reporter:
Announcement of the Oscar nominations will stream live at Oscar.com for the first time on Tuesday. It will be the centerpiece of expanded content offerings leading up to the big event, including an Oscar prediction game and an Oscar widget that can be embedded on social networking sites.
It will be one of the most frustrating days of the year for me should the Oscars be ruined the way the Golden Globes were. I am still baffled at what the WGA thinks they accomplished by sabotaging the HFPA’s little award show, an award show that is only meant to celebrate the work that they created. I would be even more baffled should they decide the Oscars should suffer the same fate.
I am of the camp that believes watching anything online is a complete waste of time unless you have your shit hooked up through your television and your media center PC with this that and the other thing running all throughout your house. As for me, I want to sit back, type in the winners and read Laremy’s live blog. That, to me, is what the Oscars are all about… that, and of course beer and pizza. It isn’t often I drink beer and eat pizza folks, I live for those days.
