Below are the only actresses who have the slightest chance at an Oscar nomination.
Saoirse Ronan, Atonement
Vanessa Redgrave, Atonement
Jennifer Garner, Juno
Helena Bonham Carter, Sweeney Todd
Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton
Catherine Keener, Into the Wild
Ruby Dee, American Gangster
Cate Blanchett, I’m Not There
The Locks: Amy Ryan (Gone Baby Gone), Cate Blanchett (I’m Not There) and Tilda Swinton (Michael Clayton)
Okay, I have to come clean here. I only put Jennifer Garner’s name in there to piss Brad off. I do believe there is a chance she could sneak in if Juno is a big hit with the Academy but it’s more like a one in a million chance. Or billion.
That leaves Carter, Redgrave, Dee, Ronan and Keener and I have to pick two of these broads and squeeze them in the final sports. I like Keener a lot because she got SAG support and I believe the Academy wants to lick Sean Penn’s bum. I’m going to count her in.
Dee is really, really old. The Academy loves to nominate the old geezers sometimes but it can’t escape my mind that if they are going to reward an old geezer for five minutes of work, you’d be insane not to nominate Vanessa Redgrave.
But I don’t think they’ll nominate Vanessa Redgrave. It’s too small a role. They should, but they won’t. I just can’t see it happening. Five minutes and you’re in? No. Then again … Judi Dench.
And Helena Bonham Carter is too much of a wild card since I don’t even know for sure what category they’d be eyeing her for. So by process of elimination, I’m liking these gals for the Best Supporting Actress Nominees of 2007:
Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
Tilda Swinton, Michael Clayton
Cate Blanchett I’m Not There
Saoirse Ronan, Atonement
Catherine Keener, Into the Wild
Spoilers that give me the most pause: Vanessa Redgrave. And I’d welcome being wrong on this one.
