Box-Office Wrap-Up: Nov. 23 – Nov. 25, 2007

I said it would be easy… and it was. At least at the top slot. I was a little worried when Enchanted took in $14m on Friday but thankfully everyone settled down and made my prediction look decent. Let’s break this thing down.
#1 movie predicted correctly: Two Week In A Row
A very cute movie that deserved the crown, if only because it was the best of a bad wide opening weekend. Hitman, The Mist, these were not films you could get behind. I didn’t see This Christmas so perhaps I could have gotten behind it… but we’ll never know. It shall remain a mystery.
Result: 35.3 million (My rank: #1, $3.2m off)
Hey, wait a second, this was the number Beowulf was supposed to haul in. Word got out on that one I guess. This should face a huge weekend two drop-off, think 55% and up.
Result: 18.6 million (My rank: #3, $6.5m off)
I wasn’t that far off, under 20%, so I’m giving myself like a C+ or B- here. Yeah, that’s rough, but Oracle school is no joke. Beowulf has made around $56m at the box office, or, as I like to call it “Not nearly enough to ever make this movie profitable.”
Result: 16.2 million (My rank: #2, $2.3m off)
It did better than I would have wanted but this is another one that will face real problems in weekend two. Not from new competition, Awake barely counts, but from the fact that people have this nasty habit of talking about movies. When they talk about this one it won’t end well.
Result: 13.0 million (My rank: #4, $2.1m off)
Yikes. Here is an example of how knowing the Wed/Thurs numbers actually hurt me. Bee Movie was faltering so I figured people were done with it. Little did I know a whole new group of rubes was being bussed in. What happened guys? I thought we had a deal.
Result: 12.0 million (My rank: #8, $3.8m off)
Good news here though, Fred Claus was what we thought it was. I can’t wait to see the unrated DVD.
Result: 10.7 million (My rank: #6, $1.2m off)
It was just a stronger family weekend than I projected overall. It’s becoming like a refrain at this point – but look for a terrible weekend two here too. That 39% over on RottenTomatoes isn’t lying.
Result: 9.4 million (My rank: #9, $2.0m off)
If I had a family I would have taken them to see this. Perhaps it’s good news that I don’t. It just seems to me that you’re better off letting them see a good movie instead of something without bad language.
Result: 9.2 million (My rank: #7, $.7m off)
I wasn’t too far off on the dollars, this got murdered as projected, but all of the family revenue pushed this way down the list. I bet Stephen King is sad about this one, or at least as sad as someone with a couple hundred million in the bank can get.
Result: 9.0 million (My rank: #5, $1.1m off)
You gotta like the ten for ten in the top ten though, don’t you? Yes, you do. I’m glad plenty of you took this in, hopefully you liked it too. Tell a buddy.
Result: 8.1 million (My rank: #10, $1.1m off)
