I don’t quite know what to make of this story as Variety announces that John C. Reilly is set to star as the lead vampire in Cirque du Freak for director Paul Weitz.
On one hand this new movie is a vampire flick, but on the other it is also a children’s story. On top of that it is being directed by the guy that brought us American Pie, About a Boy and In Good Company. Oh, and it involves something called Vapanese…
Apparently the children’s stories of which it’s based on where written by Darren Shan. In the film Reilly will play a vampire who drafts a 14-year old to serve as his assistant. The youth is turned into a half-vampire and becomes the catalyst in a battle between vampires and the rival Vampanese.
Are you able to process that better than me? Is there any hope for this one?
Either way, Weitz is directing from his own screenplay and production is set to begin in February.
Reilly will be seen later this year in the Judd Apatow produced R-rated Walk the Line spoof comedy musical Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. The film releases on December 21.
