Exclusive: Fuqua Wants Sean Penn for Scarpa

Earlier today, ComingSoon.net sat down for a few minutes with filmmaker Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Shooter) to talk about his groundbreaking police drama Brooklyn’s Finest, starring Richard Gere, Ethan Hawke and Don Cheadle, which is premiering at the Sundance Film Festival.

When we asked Fuqua about any projects he has in development, he mentioned wanting to stay in New York with a biopic based on the life of Gregory Scarpa Sr., the chief enforcer for the Colombo crime family, known as “The Grim Reaper,” who was also an FBI informant for over thirty years:

“It’s called ‘Scarpa’ with Morgan Creek, and it’s New York again, Brooklyn, FBI, Italian gangsters, it takes place from the ’60s to the ’90s, and we’re talking to Sean Penn.”

When we asked whether he’d been bitten by the indie bug having made Brooklyn’s Finest outside the studio system, Fuqua told us, “I still want to do it for under a certain amount of money – I would just love to stay under $30, under $25 (million), I’d love to try and have my independence that way.”

Look for our review of Fuqua’s latest (and finest) soon and our full interview sometime next week.
