DreamWorks Animation Going 3-D with ‘Aliens’

Variety reports that DreamWorks Animation is hoping to join the 3-D animated fray with a film called Monsters vs. Aliens, currently slated for release in 2009. Unfortunately a quick check over at Fandango doesn’t have ticket sales for the film just as it didn’t have tickets for Toy Story 3 in 2010 (dammit!).

Recently Sony Animation went 3-D with Open Season and Monster House and Disney brought back Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas for 3-D screens to name a few. The near future holds Disney’s Meet the Robinsons, which will hit about 600 digital 3-D screens this month and then another film still not on Fandango is James Cameron’s Avatar, which Fox will distribute in 3-D in 2009.

DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg said they had considered going 3-D with some of their 2007 and 2008 films but, “We have not really been enthusiastic about turning 2-D into 3-D in post-production,” he told Variety, referring to the way 3-D effects have been added to pics thus far. “It doesn’t begin to touch the quality of product that is originated in 3-D.”

I can only assume this means a Shrek 4 in 3-D. Another 2007 film set for 3-D will be Paramount’s Beowulf on November 16. Following that will be New Line’s live-action Journey 3-D starring Brendan Fraser in 2008.
