Word out of Variety is that Warner Bros. has hired Kiernan and Michele Mulroney to write a script based on DC Comics’ Justice League of America (JLA), a comic book franchise that involves superheroes Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, the Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter and all the rest of DC Comics’ biggest names. Sounds great doesn’t it? Chances something like that gets made? I would say that borders on 1 in a gagillion-a-million-trillion-badillion. If it cost a reported $270 million to make Superman Returns and $150 million to make Batman Begins how much will it cost to make a movie with both superheroes along with all the others? Warner Bros. can’t even manage to get Wonder Woman or The Flash figured out on their own, and this brings up even a larger issue.
Right now WB has a successful Batman franchise which will continue with The Dark Knight. The same goes with Superman Returns. Also, they are making The Flash with Shawn Levy directing after David Goyer was dropped. Then you have Wonder Woman which recently dropped Joss Whedon and was replaced by no one. Rumors of an Aquaman movie are also around and have been forever.
Now, with the other movies out of the way what about casting? Do we need to get Christian Bale for Batman, Brandon Routh for Superman, Kate Bosworth for Lois Lane and so on? Also, does this film need to continue the themes from their single hero counterparts?
Variety says the storyline and casting will, to a large degree, depend upon the story arc for the JLA feature and at what point in the superheroes’ lives the plot takes place.
There is one way this will work, animation. Other than that it will be far too costly at least at this time. Perhaps in 2015 CGI animation will be able to help cut costs to a large enough degree to make this feasible, but for now I just don’t see it working. Sounds to me like it is just a ploy to garner more attention at the New York Comic Con.
