Webber Tackles ‘Barbarella’

In 1968 Jane Fonda starred as the intergalactic scantilly clad superhero Barbarella who vanquishes robots and monsters on the planet Lythion. In an article over at Variety it is reported that producer Dino de Laurentiis is ready to remake this little sexual heroine with Hannibal Rising helmer, Peter Webber, taking the reins.

In the article De Laurentiis refers to the film as “Female James Bond –in outer space.” Uh, okay.

Apparently the financing isn’t in place yet so the film, along with an underwater epic about a killer whale, called Butterworth, is not yet greenlit, but Dino’s wife Martha tells Variety, “The Mideast is going to be bi,” in reference to raising the coin for the pictures.

Curiously enough the De Laurentiis couple is still talking about what seemed like a dead project, Baz Luhrmann’s Alexander pic, which originally had Leonardo DiCaprio cast in the lead role along with Nicole Kidman. Chances of that one happening anytime soon is not likely as Baz is busy working on Australia, but it does give us time to still remove the sour taste of Oliver Stone’s Alexander from our mouths even though Stone is getting ready to unleash his third cut of the film on DVD on February 27 called Alexander Revisited: The Final Cut.
