One of the things I like about many of the great American directors is that they don’t take things too far. So when I see news that there is talk of doing a sequel and a prequel to Martin Scorsese‘s recent hit The Departed, which just earned teh director a Golden Globe for Best Director, I begin to cringe.
Sure, if Marty decides to do it I am sure the script(s) will be worthy, but it isn’t necessary. However, the little rumor is out there as Mark Wahlberg who played Dignam in the flick was quoted by AceShowbiz saying, “We may do another one, because it’s based on a Hong Kong film [Infernal Affairs], and there is a trilogy… So we may do a sequel with a new cast, and a prequel and bring back the rest of the guys.”
Yeah, gonna need a new cast because everyone pretty much ends up dead in the first flick. Wahlberg says, “They’re talking to Robert De Niro and a couple of other people… Anybody who is anybody wants to work with Marty.”
Who knows what will happen. If it is done correctly I can’t wait to see it, but I am skeptical since Marty is not exactly the type of guy to do a sequel. After all, he has that Roosevelt movie he is rumored to be doing with DiCaprio, Silence based on a Japanese novel by Shusaku Endo and an adaptation of Eric Jager’s historical tome “The Last Duel: A True Story of Crime, Scandal and Trial by Combat in Medieval France.”
If you see time in there for a Departed sequel and prequel for Marty let me know. It would be an insult to do it without Scorsese, but this is Hollywood so who knows?
