Hollywood must be running around trying to figure out what the next Oscar winning musical adaptation is going to be after the recent success of Chicago and, of course, the buzz surrounding Dreamgirls. In 2007 it looks like it is going to be Hairspray trying to make the jump, but Meryl Streep is being eyed for what would most likely be 2008’s contender in a musical adaptation of ABBA’s Mamma Mia!
The Hollywood Reporter tells us that Streep will star in the Universal Pictures and Playtone adaptation for first time helmer Phyllinda Lloyd. The story revolves around a bride-to-be and her formerly rebellious mom who raised her on a Greek island and never disclosed the identity of her father. The bride locates three men who might be her father and invites them to her wedding. Streep will play the mom.
The hit musical features the retro club hit “Dancing Queen” and was adapted for the screen by one of the musical’s creators Catherine Johnson.
