Box-Office Wrap-Up: Sep. 15 – Sep. 17

#1 movie predicted correctly: Two Weeks In A Row

1. Gridiron Gang $15.0m (My rank:#1, $1.1m Off)
I think the studios are starting to realize that releasing a football movie in the fall is the way to go. Doesn’t have to be good, doesn’t have to make sense, just some pigskin and a release date.

2. The Black Dahlia $10.3m (My rank:#2, $.8m Off)

I looked up the production budget and it was $50m. That seems like a lot! Especially for a dialogue heavy period piece. Maybe they were just shooting for awards or something.

3. Everyone’s Hero $6.1m (My rank:#3, $2.7m Off)

He’s not my hero and I’d bet he’s not yours either. Which leaves the sad last question. Just whose hero is this guy?

4. The Last Kiss $4.7m (My rank:#4, $.9m Off)

I’m imploring you to see it. Regular readers know I don’t implore too often but I am here. See this one to give the message “Hey, no more poop films for me, thanks.”

5. The Covenant $4.7m (My rank:#5, $.1m Off)

I am now five for the top five. I’m not sure when I did that last. Maybe never.

6. Invincible $3.9m (My rank:#9, $1.1m Off)

How many times can I get this one wrong? My mistake was making the rank (smell and numeral) of this movie personal. I’ve got to be a more business-like Oracle.

7. The Illusionist $3.7m (My rank:#7, $.7m Off)

Back to good with the magic movie. This is another film good enough that you should pay eight bucks. I don’t say that lightly, I know you are probably poor. I am too.

8. Little Miss Sunshine $3.3m (My rank:#10, $1.1m Off)

So this is now three good films out, so you can’t claim that it’s all sour nasty out there. It’s only medium sour nasty.

9. Hollywoodland $2.7m (My rank:#6, $.6m Off)

Total haul $10.3m Off. No budget released. But I bet it was more than ten million. Ben Affleck’s hairdresser cost more than that.

10. Crank $2.7m (My rank: Not Ranked)

Crank? What you doing here? I’m not mad at ya, I just didn’t forsee you making dollars. See you Thursday for more hard hitting predictions.
