Gondrey Tells Black ‘Be Kind Rewind’

This might be the funniest idea I have ever heard as Jack Black has been cast in Michel Gondry‘s next directorial outing Be Kind Rewind for Focus Features.

The film will star Black as a man who becomes accidentally magnetized while trying to sabotage a power plant. His magnetic field erases all the tapes in the video store where his best friend works. To save the store, the duo re-enact and re-film every movie that its single loyal customer, an elderly woman, with signs of dementia. The pair re-creates a long line of films including The Lion King, Rush Hour, Back to the Future and Robocop.

The pic begins a two-month shoot Sept. 6 in New York.

Gondry scripted the pic and if you are unsure about who he actually is, he recently directed Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, both for Focus. He is also directing The Science of Sleep for Warner Independent Pictures, which will release later this year.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Producer Georges Bermann of Partizan said Gondry, who has partnered with Partizan since 1989, came to him in November with several ideas. “Michel is a super-fast writer,” Bermann said. “He handed in a draft three weeks. Focus was interested the second they heard the pitch and made the deal within a week.”
