Gibson Penned Feature Heads to Disney

Mel Gibson was the talk of the town last year as The Passion of the Christ created enough controversy to satisfy everyone, and now Variety comes to us with word on his next, Apocalypto.

Gibson wrote and will direct the film, which is set in an ancient civilization some 3,000 years ago. The title is a Greek term which means “an unveiling” or “new beginning.” Consistent with such Gibson films as Braveheart and Passion, the script depicts abundant action and violence.

The action pic found its way to Disney after a reportedly fierce bidding war and is expected to release next summer. Gibson is already in pre-production and scouting locations for the shoot. Variety also reports that Gibson will not star in the pic and may not use a celebrity for the film.
