Oldman Set for Fincher’s ‘Zodiac’

Variety is reporting that Gary Oldman has signed on for David Fincher‘s next flick Zodiac as attorney Melvin Bell. The film is a Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. co-production and will begin filming in September.

Oldman joins a large cast of names including the likes of Mark Ruffalo, Robert Downey Jr., Jake Gyllenhaal and Anthony Edwards in the film based on Robert Graysmith’s “Zodiac” and 2002 sequel “Zodiac Unmasked: The Identity of America’s Most Elusive Serial Killer Revealed.”

The film is described as a thriller detailing the obsessive efforts of three people who sought to bring the famed Zodiac killer to justice and the toll it took on their personal lives. The books trace the mystery of the serial killer who terrorized the San Francisco area from 1966-78. The killer committed at least 37 murders and documented his exploits in taunting letters sent to the San Francisco Chronicle.

Belli, the San Francisco-based “King of Torts,” received a letter from the Zodiac in 1969 in which the killer wished the attorney a Merry Christmas and said he hoped to retain enough self-control not to claim a ninth and 10th victim.
