Zemeckis Directing ‘Beowulf’

Steve Bing has faith in Robert Zemeckis and why not? Zemeckis tossed down $80 million for the Zemeckis helmed Polar Express and Sony and Bing have already gambled upwards of $2 million on a Beowulf script penned by Richard Avary and Neil Gaiman, for Robert Zemeckis to direct.

Like The Polar Express, Beowulf will be a motion-capture film and brings to life one of the oldest surviving pieces of Anglo-Saxon literature, penned sometime before the 10th century A.D. The main gist of the story follows Beowulf, a Norse warrior, with the central storyline following his battle against Grendel the murderous troll.

Considering the work involved in bringing this one to life we probably won’t see it on the big screen until late 2006, but more likely 2007, but to get your Beowulf fix there will be a live-action version, directed by Sturla Gunnarsson, which is currently in post.

The live-action film stars Gerard Butler, Stellan Skarsgård, Sarah Polley, Tony Curran and Rory McCann but is yet to find a distributor or a release date. However we do have some looks at the film for you here.
