New York Crix Dub ‘Rings’ the ‘King’ of 2003

The New York Film Critics Circle has made their opinion heard and they give no one movie absolute honors as the standout of the year. Rings gains attention and Sofia Coppola’s Lost in Translation finds themselves winning top awards.

The award for Best Picture goes to Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, which is a slight change from what other early awards have given out as the dreary Eastwood pic, Mystic River, has gotten top nods from the likes of The Boston Society of Film Critics and the National Board of Review.

One place the Boston and New York crix agreed was on best director giving the honors to Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation, probably this year’s most pleasant surprise, even Bill Murray found himself honored as Best Actor for his performance.

The NYFCC also made it apparent that a big box-office doesn’t necessarily make for award winning efforts as the yet-to-be released French animated pic The Tripletts of Belleville took top honors as Best Animated Film over Finding Nemo.

Other honories included a large group of smaller independent films pushing the box-office busters to the side. Best Actress went to Hope Davis for her performance in, the much talked about, Fine-Line feature American Splendor.

Supporting nods went to Eugene Levy for A Mighty Wind and Shohreh Aghdashloo for her fine addition to House of Sand and Fog, which hits theaters on Dec. 26th.
