Bruce Almighty, the year’s biggest box office comedy hit, celebrated another heavenly event this week as the biggest-selling comedy DVD release in Thanksgiving history, posting over $80 million in consumer spending on both DVD and VHS. Released just in time for “Black Friday,” the day after Thanksgiving and traditionally the biggest shopping day of the year, Bruce Almighty sold five million units in its first week of release.
“We are blessed to serve up a comedy feast that audiences were thankful for,” said Craig Kornblau, president, Universal Studios Home Video.
He added, “With this latest success we are definitely on a roll with our slate of releases and very thankful that Bruce Almighty sets a new benchmark.”
Bruce Almighty was released in theaters on May 23, 2003 and earned over $242 million at the box office during its domestic theatrical run. The DVD and VHS were released on November 25.
Bruce Almighty stars Jim Carrey, Jennifer Aniston, and Morgan Freeman and is directed by Tom Shadyac. The DVD includes hours of special features including “The Process of Jim,” a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of film that contains amusing on-the-set footage and interviews. Over 30 minutes of extended deleted scenes are included in the “Deleted Scenes” section and the “Outtakes” feature offers hilarious on-camera slip-ups and ad-libs by the cast not shown in theaters. There is also an in-depth commentary by celebrated comedy director Tom Shadyac, as he recounts the tale of the creative process behind the cameras and shares his own insights and those of Jim Carrey.
