The Pixar Animation Presentation at D23 Expo
At today’s D23 Expo, during the Walt Disney Pictures Animation and Pixar Animation panel hosted by Chief Creative Officer John Lasseter, they showed a bunch of new footage, including premiering the upcoming Inside Out short “Riley’s First Date?,” new clips from The Good Dinosaur and Finding Dory and a few announcements were made.Â
One big announcement was that Lee Unkrich’s Untitled Day of the Dead Film is now officially called Coco, and Unkrich was on hand with producer Darla K. Anderson, reuniting the team from the Oscar-winning Toy Story 3. They showed some of the test animation for the movie that’s based around a 12-year-old Mexican boy named Miguel. No release date was announced.
UPDATE: Director Lee Unkrich tweeted a picture of Pixar Animation’s upcoming line-up and if you zoom in on the teaser poster for Coco, you can see that it says “Fall 2017” even though nothing was announced specifically at the presentation or in the Disney press release sent out about the movie.
2nd UPDATE: We can now confirm that Coco is scheduled for release on Thanksgiving weekend, November 22, 2017.
Director Andrew Stanton, co-director Angus MacLane and Producer Lindsey Collins were on hand to present the first footage from his sequel Finding Dory, which opens on June 17, 2016. First, they announced some new voice cast including the new voice of Nemo, Hayden Rolence. Residents at the Monterey Institute where Dory ends up include Ed O’Neil from “Modern Family” as an octopus named Hank who’s “a bit of a curmudgeon,” while Ty Burrell (also from “Modern Family”) will voice a beluga whale named Bailey, who thinks he has a massive head injury. Kaitlin Olson from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” joins the voice cast as a whale shark named Destiny, who is neighbors with Bailey.
They’re joining the returning Ellen DeGeneres (who made a surprise appearance) and Albert Brooks and the previously-announced Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy voicing Dory’s parents Jenny and Charlie.
They showed the entire short film “Riley’s First Date?” from Inside Out story supervisor Josh Cooley, which will be on the Blu-ray, released on November 3. (The movie will also be available on Digital HD on October 13.)
The short focuses more on Riley’s parents and what’s going on in their heads after the scene at the end of the movie where Riley meets a boy at a hockey game. If you missed it, there’s a preview of the short here and you can see three new stills from the short in the gallery below.
They also showed footage from The Good Dinosaur, some of which we saw at an earlier presentation as described here, but also some new clips that hadn’t been seen before and gave the first look at the trio of Rexes voiced by Sam Elliot, Anna Paquin and AJ Buckley, which you can see below:
Lasseter was joined on stage by his Toy Story 4 co-director Josh Cooley, producer Galyn Susman and writers Will McCormack and Rashida Jones to talk about the anticipated June 16, 2017 release and they were joined by composer Randy Newman who performed “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” live to end the presentation.
And as promised, here’s a few stills from the short “Riley’s First Date?”
