Amy Poehler to Headline Basketball Comedy for Universal

Amy Poehler’s Joy got to juggle lots of memory balls in this summer’s smash Inside Out, and now she’s going for a double dribble as Variety reports that she will star in a currently-untitled basketball comedy for Universal Pictures.

Poehler is slotted to play a once-promising basketball coach asked to lead an NBA team, not unlike real-life coach Becky Hammon who led the San Antonio Spurs’ summer league team to a recent title.

Ike Barinholtz, perhaps best known as Russian baseball player Ivan Dochenko on “Eastbound & Down,” will also appear in the film which he co-write with David Stassen. The two of them worked on “The Mindy Project” and recently wrote Warner Bros.’ Dwayne Johnson/Kevin Hart vehicle Central Intelligence.

Poehler will produce alongside Scott Stuber and Dylan Clark, who also produced Central Intelligence. The “Parks & Recreation” actress will next be seen this Christmas opposite frequent comedy partner Tina Fey in Sisters, and will team up with fellow SNL alum Will Ferrell on the illegal casino laugher The House. She will also reprise her role as talent show choreographer Susie in the 8-part “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp,” which will premiere on Netflix July 31.
