Alchemy, the leading independent film and television distribution entity founded by CEO Bill Lee, announced today it has acquired all North American rights to The Runner, an intense political drama starring Academy Award winner Nicolas Cage, written and directed by Austin Stark. The film co-stars Sarah Paulson, Connie Nielsen, Wendell Pierce, Bryan Batt and Academy Award nominee Peter Fonda, and will be released later this year.
“With ‘The Runner,’ Austin Stark has crafted a captivating drama through a personal lens while tackling an event that resonated globally and remains very relevant in today’s environment,” said Brooke Ford, Alchemy EVP of Marketing. “With a superb cast led by Nicolas Cage, this film’s gripping storyline will keep audiences on the edge of their seats.”
Director Austin Stark added, “We are thrilled to be partnering with the passionate and creative team at Alchemy to share our film with audiences across North America. Collectively, we could not be more excited to bring the first narrative feature that tackles the BP oil spill to the screen, anchored by one of Nicolas Cage’s finest performances to date.”
The Runner follows an idealistic but flawed politician (Cage), who, in the aftermath of the 2010 BP oil spill, is forced to confront his dysfunctional life after his career is destroyed in a sex scandal.
Nicolas Cage is currently filming Larry Charles’ Army of One. Cage is represented by CAA, Mike Nilon at KLWGN, and Jake Bloom and Patrick Knapp at Bloom Hergott. Austin Stark is a partner at Paper Street Films (Infinitely Polar Bear), a New York City film production and finance company. The Runner marks Stark’s writing and directorial debut.
The Runner was produced by Bingo Gubelmann, Benji Kohn, Glenn Williamson, Erika Hampson, and Chris Papavasiliou. It was executive produced by Noah Millman, Ruth Mutch, Sam Bisbee, Tom Conigliaro, Galt Niederhoffer, and Todd Cohen.
