Because Nick Fury was a major player in last yearâs Captain America: The Winter Soldier, many Marvel fans were surprised by the absence of Samuel L. Jacksonâs name on the official Captain America: Civil War cast list. While promoting his new action adventure, Big Game, the Academy Award nominee revealed to IGN that heâs as surprised as anyone to be left out of the (admittedly still massive) Marvel ensemble.Â
âI was surprised I wasnât in âCivil War,'â says the star, âbecause the Russo Brothers told me I was. I donât know whatâs going on.â
Jackson also spoke a bit about another superhero film on the horizon, Brad Birdâs long-awaited The Incredibles 2.
âI was really glad to see that theyâre actually going to do it,â he says, claiming that Bird has repeatedly mentioned having him back. âSo hopefully Frozone is still alive and kicking, and looking for his super suit, so we can get this back on.â
Set for release in the United States on May 6, 2016, Captain America: Civil War is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo from a screenplay by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely. It is set to feature the return of Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America, this time joined in his âsoloâ film by fellow Avengers Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson/Falcon, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Jeremy Renner as Clint Barton/Hawkeye, Don Cheadle as Jim Rhodes/War Machine and Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch. Sebastian Stan will also be back as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier alongside Chadwick Boseman as TâChalla/Black Panther, Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter/Agent 13, Daniel BrĂźhl as Baron Helmut Zemo, Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow/Crossbones, William Hurt as General Thaddeus âThunderboltâ Ross, Paul Rudd as Scott Lang/Ant-Man and Martin Freeman in a mystery role. The film is also supposed to debut Marvelâs new Spider-Man, although casting has not quite been confirmed.
Captain America: Civil War picks up where Avengers: Age of Ultron left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.
Information on The Incredibles 2, meanwhile, is a bit more scarce. Bird is currently writing the screenplay and is attached to direct the film, currently without a release date.
