Variety reports that Entertainment One and BBC Films will co-finance Life on the Road, the spin-off movie from “The Office” to be written, directed and starring Ricky Gervais.
Gervais will reprise his iconic role as David Brent for Life on the Road, which will follow Brent’s life 15 years after the end of the “documentary” series “The Office.” A documentary crew finds out what Brent is doing now and what’s happened in the last 15 years since his redundancy from his beloved Wernham Hogg. He’s a sales rep now, selling cleaning products up and down the country, but has never really given up on his dream of being a rock star, deciding to ultimately self-finance a U.K tour with his band “Foregone Conclusion.”
“I’m so excited that the world will see what David Brent is up to now and where his future lies,” Gervais said. “This film delves much more into his private life than ‘The Office’ ever did and we really get to peel back the layers of this extraordinary, ordinary man.”
According to the deal, eOne Features will distribute Life on the Road theatrically in the U.K. and Australia/New Zealand, with no U.S. distributer in the running yet. “The Office” first aired on BBC Two in July of 2001 and has become a cultural phenomenon, spawning a popular American spin-off starring Steve Carell as well as localized adaptations in France, French-Canada, Germany, Chile, Israel and Sweden.
