Ava DuVernay Being Eyed for Future Marvel Studios Film

It might not be too surprising that Selma director Ava DuVernay is being courted to direct a Marvel Studios movie as per TheWrapbecause she did direct the acclaimed Oscar-nominated film Selma last year. They suggest that she’s either going to direct the announced Black Panther or Captain Marvel, both of which are scheduled for 2018, and that Black Panther is more likely since it’s the earlier of the two.

We won’t get into the presumptions being made by TheWrap about why DuVernay is in talks, because the fact is that she’s proven herself as a director already, and Marvel Studios has seen what a great job that she can do directing any movie, but a big deal is being made about her possibly being the first woman to direct a movie for Marvel Studios (Patty Jenkins was attached to direct Thor: The Dark World, but she left the project and she’s now slated to direct Warner Bros.’ Wonder Woman movie.)

According to the story, Marvel and DuVernay have been in talks for her to take over one of their comic book properties and that there’s an interest in doing something together, although they’re also talking to other directors for both movies mentioned.

Scheduled for July 2018, Black Panther will star Chadwick Boseman, who will be introduced as T’Challa in next year’s Captain America: Civil War, while Captain Marvel will star a yet-to-be-cast actress as Carol Danvers who is given alien powers by the Kree. The latter is being written by Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve and it’s shooting for a November 2, 2018 release date.
