TheWrap is reporting that “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez will take the female lead opposite Mark Wahlberg in Lionsgate and Participant Media’s Deepwater Horizon movie, to be directed by Peter Berg (Lone Survivor).
Based on the true events that occurred on a BP oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon chronicles the courage of those who worked on the Deepwater Horizon and the extreme moments of bravery and survival in the face of what would become one of the biggest man-made disasters in world history.
A recent Golden Globe-winner, Rodriguez beat out Kristin Stewart for the role of Andrea Fleytas, a navigator aboard the doomed rig who was reprimanded for sending out a distress signal to the Coast Guard during the disaster. Wahlberg will play electrician Mike Williams.
Featuring a screenplay by Matthew Sand and Matthew Carnahan, Deepwater Horizon is being produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Look for it to hit theaters September 30, 2016.
