Sony Pictures to Remake Blue Thunder

Heat Vision is reporting that Columbia Pictures/Sony has officially begun development on a remake of the 1983 action thriller Blue Thunder, which centered on a high-tech helicopter designed for urban pacification. The remake will update the premise with a focus on drone technology.

Writer and Marvel Studios executive Craig Kyle, who is currently penning the script for Thor: Ragnarok, will adapt the screenplay based on the original, which was written by Dan O’Bannon (Alien) and Don Jakoby (Evolution) and directed by John Badham (Wargames). The ’83 Blue Thunder starred Roy Scheider and Daniel Stern, and later became a short-lived TV series in ’84.

Dana Brunetti of Trigger Street Productions will re-team with Columbia’s new President of Production Michael De Luca following their successful collaboration on recent blockbuster Fifty Shades of Grey. Jason Blumenthal will also produce for Escape Artists.
