Supergirl’s Most-Criticized Scene Was Different in Test Screening

One of Supergirl’s most controversial elements could have been avoided. DC Studios‘ second film, directed by Craig Gillespie, was released in June to mixed reviews from both critics and audiences.

What was different about ‘Supergirl’s’ final fight scene in an early test screening?

One of Supergirl’s most divisive elements is its use of a cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” during its climactic battle. However, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that the film nearly featured a different song before its release. According to the report, DC Studios held a test screening for the film in February that featured a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” The song was reportedly chosen by James Gunn, who is known for using needle drops successfully in his films.

During the film’s post-production, DC Studios developed its own cut of the film as executives were concerned about Gillespie’s vision. The studio’s version won in test screenings and became the theatrical cut. However, the final film retained the cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle.”

Unfortunately, the film failed at the box office, though not all of its problems have to do with its musical choices. The film suffered a catastrophic 74.1% drop in its second weekend and has grossed more than $100 million worldwide. At the time of writing, Supergirl has a 54% score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 333 reviews. According to the film’s reception on CinemaScore, audiences also weren’t too keen on the film, contributing to negative word of mouth. SuperHeroHype’s Matt Morrison liked the film, calling it a “worthy entry in the DCU canon.”

Regardless of its box office troubles, Milly Alcock’s Supergirl will return in Man of Tomorrow.

Supergirl is playing in theaters now.
