Misfits’ Glenn Danzig Is Bringing His Fantasy-Horror Comic to the Big Screen

Glenn Danzig has spent decades building a reputation as one of rock and metal’s most distinctive voices. The legendary Misfits frontman is once again stepping behind the camera, this time adapting one of his own dark fantasy creations for the big screen. With production preparations already underway, Danzig is expanding his creative universe by bringing one of his horror comics to the big screen.

Glenn Danzig sets next directorial effort with Hellmask

Glenn Danzig is officially moving forward with Hellmask, a feature film adaptation of his fantasy horror comic of the same name, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The project marks the musician’s third feature as a director.

The upcoming movie is based on Hellmask, a story published through Danzig’s comic company, Verotik. Known for specializing in horror, dark fantasy, and mature-themed graphic storytelling, Verotik introduced the comic during its 30th anniversary celebration. The announcement was made in October 2023. Since then, the title has attracted attention from fans of both Danzig’s music and his comic book ventures.

According to the official description, Hellmask unfolds in a brutal medieval world shaped by dark sorcery, ruthless warriors, and large-scale bloody conflicts. The story “follows a violent supernatural tale steeped in gothic atmosphere.”

Helping bring the project to life is veteran producer and filmmaker James Cullen Bressack, who has built a career in the independent horror and action genres. Casting is currently underway ahead of a planned production start later this year.

For Misfits fans, the film represents another example of Danzig expanding the mythology he has cultivated throughout his career. Long before publishing Hellmask, the musician established Verotik as a platform for original horror stories that reflected many of the themes found in his music.

For those unfamiliar, this is not the first time Danzig has turned to his comic creations for cinematic inspiration. He previously directed Verotika in 2019, adapting stories from his publishing line. He followed it with the vampire western Death Rider in the House of Vampires in 2021. While both projects generated discussion among horror fans, Hellmask may be his most ambitious project to date.

Beyond his filmmaking pursuits, Danzig remains a towering figure in heavy music. In addition to founding the Misfits, he also launched the bands Samhain and Danzig. His music has appeared in numerous films and television projects over the years.
