Deadpool’s Next Surprising Appearance Gets Official Response From Marvel

Deadpool‘s brief appearance in an upcoming show’s trailer has been addressed by a Marvel executive. The remark came from Brad Winderbaum during a Tribeca Film Festival interview. After all, the brief Morph transformation has started speculation about a proper animated debut for the antihero.

Deadpool’s X-Men ’97 Season 2 trailer cameo gets an answer from Brad Winderbaum

In an interview with Screen Rant, Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Television, Animation, Comics and Franchise, was asked about Morph briefly turning into Deadpool in the X-Men ’97 Season 2 trailer. He was also asked whether fans might finally see the real Wade Wilson in the animated universe.

Winderbaum kept things vague, saying, “You never know… There are some fun plot lines coming up for some other characters that you caught only brief glimpses of in the OG series that I am so flippin’ excited to get on screen.”

He also addressed whether X-Men ’97 Season 2 expands its world-building further. Notably, several mutants remain missing from the present timeline. Winderbaum noted, “One of the things I love about X-Men ’97 and tapping into that 90s Saturday morning mythology is that it is like the full breadth of the 616.”

He added that the season won’t focus on other heroes stepping in to fill any void, saying, “[It] kind of exists in the background. So the Avengers are around, and other characters are around, and you really never know who you’re gonna bump into. And like reading Marvel Comics, it’s always fun when there [are] those collisions.”

Winderbaum had previously told the outlet in May 2024 that Deadpool’s exclusion wasn’t a strict rule. Rather, it was a question of timing, since X-Men ’97 and Deadpool & Wolverine were in development simultaneously. He said, “Unless it was something that really was an undeniable creative idea, it seemed like, ‘Why would we do it?'” He added that the season is already “chock-full of big, giant, amazing, fulfilling ideas,” but didn’t rule out a future appearance, noting Deadpool’s brief presence in the original series.

X-Men ’97 season 2 premieres July 1 on Disney+.
