Mike Flanagan in Talks to Direct The Exorcist: Deceiver

Mike Flanagan could be moving from King to Blatty as he’s reportedly in talks to direct the next film in The Exorcist franchise.

Mike Flanagan to Beat the Devil?

Deadline had first reported the news that Flanagan could be set to pick up the reins from The Exorcist Believer director David Gordon Green and get behind the camera for The Exorcist Deceiver.

Green opted not to direct the second film after The Exorcist Believer suffered a miserable time at the box office and was heavily criticized by critics and horror fans alike. Universal and Blumhouse had bought the rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek for $400m in 2021.

Flanagan has just wrapped up his latest Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck starring the likes of Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill. The director previously helmed other King projects Gerald’s Game, Doctor Sleep, and is behind another shot at adapting King’s epic The Dark Tower series.

The Exorcist Deceiver will be produced by Jason Blum, David Robinson, and James Robinson, with Green, McBride, and Couper Samuelson set to executive produce. It will be a co-production between Blumhouse and Morgan Creek Production, with Ryan Turek to oversee the project on behalf of Blumhouse.

The Exorcist Deceiver was pushed from its planned April 18, 2025 release date after Green left the director’s chair.
