Dwayne Johnson live-action Moana remake

Moana Live-Action Movie Release Date Delayed by Disney

Disney has officially delayed the theatrical release date for its upcoming Moana live-action movie, which, according to Dwayne Johnson, will begin its production sometime this year. Originally scheduled for a June 27, 2025 release, the remake has been pushed back for a whole year, and will now arrive in theaters on July 10, 2026.

The Moana live-action movie will be directed by Tony winner Thomas Kail, with Johnson set to portray Maui. It is produced by Dwayne Johnson, Dany and Hiram Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner, alongside Beau Flynn for Flynn Picture Co. It is executive produced by Auli‘i Cravalho and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for Moana, will also take part in the remake’s production alongside Samoan industry pro Dana Ledoux Miller.

Moana will also received an animated sequel

In addition to the live-action movie, Disney will also be releasing the highly-anticipated animated sequel to 2016’s Moana on November 27, just in time for this year’s Thanksgiving holiday. Directed and written by David G. Derrick Jr., the sequel will feature the voices of Auliʻi Cravalho and Johnson, as they reprise their respective roles as Moana and Maui.

The original was directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. It was not only a commercial success with a gross of over $600 million, but it also earned positive reviews from critics and earned two Oscar nominations including Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.
