According to Variety, Focus Features has officially acquired the worldwide theatrical distribution rights to the upcoming comedy movie The Ballad of Wallis Island. The project will be led by Oscar nominee Carey Mulligan, who’s set to portray a musician that gets stuck in a remote island with her former bandmate and ex-lover.
“The film tells the of Charles, an eccentric lottery winner who tries to reunite his favorite musical duo Mortimer-McGwyer despite the fact they split up many years ago,” reads the film’s initial synopsis. “One day, Mortimer and McGwyer are summoned to Charles’ remote island to play a private show. As old tensions resurface, Charles desperately tries to find a way to salvage the situation so that he can finally enjoy his dream gig.”
Who’s involved in The Ballad of Wallis Island?
The Ballad of Wallis Island is directed and produced by James Griffiths from a screenplay written by Tom Basden (Plebs) and Tim Key (See How They Run). Mulligan will be starring alongside Basden, Key, Sian Clifford (Fleabag) and Akemnji Ndifornyen (The Queen’s Gambit). The film is executive produced by Mulligan, Key, Basden, Sarah Monteith, Laurence Brown, Stephen Kelliher and Yana Georgieva, with Rupert Majendie producing.
Mulligan most recently starred in a few high-profile movies, including Saltburn, Maestro, and Spaceman. Besides the upcoming comedy, the acclaimed actress’ next project will be Laika’s long-in-development animated movie Wildwood.
