Smallville Animated Sequel Series Update Given by Michael Rosenbaum

Michael Rosenbaum famously played Lex Luthor in the hit series Smallville and recently teased that the cast behind the series wants it to continue in animated form.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Rosenbaum was asked about a long-in-development animated sequel series for Smallville. Rosenbaum revealed that the idea for it is “great” and that they hope to be able to pitch it to James Gunn and DC sometime in the future.

“All I could share is that it’s a great idea,” Rosenbaum said. “We have Al and Miles, the creators of Smallville backing us up. When it’s the right time, we’d like to go and do this; pitch to Warner Bros. It has to be the right time, and right now is not the right time. We had the strike, we had a change of executives at DC — one being one of my best friends in the world, James Gunn. When the time’s right, I think it’s something that’s a no-brainer, unless they have other ideas. We’d like to do it — the whole cast would like to do it. They would voice their own character from the show, and we have a concept of what the show is.”

In 2021, Welling revealed that he and Rosenbaum were working on an animated series that will serve as a sequel to Smallville. Welling said they were still working on the project in 2022, though there’s been little news regarding the project ever since.

What is Smallville about?

Developed by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, the Superman Smallville series premiered in October 2001 on The WB. The series ran for ten seasons, eventually finishing its run on The CW in 2010.

Along with Rosenbaum, it starred Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, Eric Johnson as Whitney Fordman, Sam Jones III as Pete Ross, Allison Mack as Chloe Sullivan, Annette O’Toole as Martha Kent, Jon Schneider as Jonathan Kent, and Erica Durance as Lois Lane.

All ten seasons of Smallville are currently streaming on Hulu.
