Box Office Results: Bob Marley Sings, Madame Web Tumbles Over President’s Day Weekend

Why does Hollywood keep making biopics? Well, because they bring the money. Witness Bob Marley: One Love, the musical about the acclaimed singer/songwriter, hauled in a better-than-expected $52 million over the six-day President’s Day weekend ($34.1M 4-day, $28.6M 3-day) and a worldwide $81M total, per Deadline.

Not faring as well is Sony’s Madame Web, which stalled at the box office with $26M over its first six days ($18M 4-day, $15.3M 3-day) after abysmal reviews and a very ho-hum marketing campaign. Worldwide, the superhero pic starring Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney collected $51.9M. Ouch.

Once again, the question of whether superhero movies are dead will become a hot topic. No, superhero movies are not dead, but audiences are no longer as forgiving of a lackluster product. Madame Web should have been a straight-up Spider-Woman flick starring Sydney Sweeney in full spidey costume rather than an origin story for an obscure character unknown to the general public.

This week sees the release of Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls and the rerelease of Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, neither of which is expected to set the world on fire. Luckily, we have Dune: Part Two just around the corner, which should be the first true blockbuster of the year. Stay tuned!
