Set to give a fresh spin on Mary Shelley’s classic horror novel, Lisa Frankenstein is described as a “coming-of-rage love story” about a young woman who has a crush on a handsome corpse. Scheduled for a theatrical release on February 9, 2024, a new image has been released (via Empire), highlighting the gothic romance between Kathryn Newton’s Lisa Swallows and Cole Sprouse’s Victorian corpse.
Along with previously unveiled photos and a trailer released back in October, the new image sets the tone for the forthcoming horror comedy. You can check out the image below:
Lisa Frankenstein is shaping up to be another hit horror comedy
While it is still too early to assume how the story will fare once it hits theaters next year, the horror comedy genre has seen a fair amount of favorable attention from critics and audiences alike.
Following a similar concept to Shelley’s Frankenstein, the film is written by Diablo Cody — the writer behind 2000’s cult classic Jennifer’s Body — and will serve as Zelda Williams’ directorial debut. It will follow an unpopular and completely misunderstood high schooler who suddenly re-animates a good-looking Victorian corpse. She will then start to rebuild the corpse into the man of her dreams, using only a broken tanning bed in her home.
Rated PG-13 for “violent content” and “bloody images,” the film’s official synopsis reads: “A coming of rage love story about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.”
Besides Newton (Freaky) and Sprouse (Riverdale), the rest of the Lisa Frankenstein cast includes Carla Gugino (The Haunting of Hill House), Liza Soberano (Alone/Together), Joe Chrest (Stranger Things), and Henry Eikenberry (The Crowded Room).
