Knives Out 3: Paul Giamatti Wants to Work With Rian Johnson on Sequel

Paul Giamatti wants to be cast in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 3.

Speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, per ComicBook, The Holdovers‘ Giamatti expressed his desire to make a murder mystery movie. More specifically, Giamatti mentioned wanting to play a role in Rian Johnson’s Knives Out 3.

“There’s been this really great revival of the kind of like specifically Agatha Christie, but the kind of like drawing room murder stuff,” he said. I love stuff like that and I think that it’s great that people are making stuff like that again – like Knives Out and all the Agatha Christie stuff. And I feel like the kids these days are digging that stuff. [Laughs] … Knives Out 3… I would like to do something like that. It would be fun to play a detective like that – or just somebody in that movie. That kind of world I love, that whole thing.”

Rian Johnson is currently working on Knives Out 3

Written and directed by Johnson, Knives Out was released in November 2019. The movie starred Daniel Craig as a charismatic private detective named Benoit Blanc, while Ana de Armas, Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, and LaKeith Stanfield also played supporting roles.

Craig reprised his role as Benoit Blanc in the 2022 sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, which also starred Janelle Monáe, Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., and Kate Hudson.

In September 2022, Johnson officially confirmed he was working on another Knives Out movie. The cast has not yet been announced, as Johnson was still writing the screenplay when the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike began in May 2023.

“It’s coming along,” he told TheWrap in October 2023, after the WGA strike had ended. “I obviously couldn’t work during the strike, and now that it’s over, I’m diving in full force, and so it’s coming along. I’ve got the premise, I’ve got the setting, I’ve got what the movie is in my head. It’s just a matter of writing the damn thing,”
