Kick-Ass Reboot in Development From Matthew Vaughn

During a recent appearance at the 2023 New York Comic Con, director Matthew Vaughn confirmed that he’s currently developing a Kick-Ass reboot of his popular superhero franchise. Vaughn also revealed that none of the original characters from the first two installments, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz, would be coming back for the reboot but is hopeful that they’ll return in future installments after the reboot.

“Kick-Ass changed people’s perception of what a superhero film is. We’re doing it again,” Vaughn said (via EW). “None of the other characters from the other Kick-Ass are in it, though we’d like to have them back after the reboot. I can’t really talk about it, but it’s fun!”

In a separate interview with ComicBook.com, Vaughn offered more details about the project, revealing that it might possibly start its production next year. “We will be doing a reboot of Kick-Ass next year, but it’s a total… it’s like… it’s as brave as the first one but totally different and more reflective of the times we’re in.”

What is Kick-Ass?

Kick-Ass is based on Mark Miller and John Romita Jr.’s graphic novel series of the same name. The R-rated superhero franchise began with the 2010 movie starring Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular vigilante. The first installment introduced Taylor-Johnson’s Dave Lizewski, a comic book-loving teenager who decides to become a superhero despite having no powers. After a rough first mission leads him to get some of his bones replaced with metal, he develops a high tolerance for pain.

Besides Taylor-Johnson, the Kick-Ass franchise also starred Chloë Grace Moretz as Mindy Macready/Hit-Girl, Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Chris D’Amico/Red Mist, Nicolas Cage as Damon Macready/Big Daddy, Evan Peters as Todd Haynes, Jim Carrey as Sal Bertolini/Colonel Stars and Stripes, John Leguizamo as Javier, Daniel Kaluuya as Black Death, Iain Glen as Ralph D’Amico, and more.
